Kentucky vs. Tennessee - Phil Fulmer Day
This is the final game of the 2008 season and our final game with Philip Fulmer, the long-time head coach for the Tennessee Vols. After a win against a tough Vandy team it seems that it may actually be possible to end a horrible season with another win. Saturday has been designated Phil Fulmer Day by the University in honour of his great contributions to the UT family. Please come join as at the Tavern for the last game of the season and the end of an era, an era which brought the Big Orange tremendous highs and tremultuous lows. For better or for worse, this will be our last game with the "Great Pumpkin"! So for god's sake, man, show up to the Tavern!!!
Oh yeah, HAPPY THANKSGIVING!

Vols @ Vanderbilt
The Volunteers of Tennessee take on the Commodores of Vanderbilt this Saturday in Nashville. UT leads the series 69-27-5 and in Nashville UT leads 34-17-4. Fulmer's record is 14-1 against the Commodores with their last win coming in 2005 when Vandy was lead by future Broncos quarterback Jay Culter. It is a forgotten fact that the Vols/Vandy game used to be a heated rivalry in the "old days" but has long since cooled. This year, however, Vandy is clearly in the hunt for a win.
Please join the Vols at the Tavern for brunch and what, hopefully, will be a good game and probably another beautiful day!

Wyoming Game NA - Phillip Fulmer Resigns
Vols, the Wyoming game will not be available at the Tavern this weekend. The weekend after that is a bi-week, but we'll be back at the Tavern for the final two games. I'll let you know the times for the remaining games as the time approaches.
As most, if not all of you know by now, Phillip Fulmer has agreed to step down as head coach of the University Of Tennessee Volunteers. He has served the Vol Nation for over 30 years in various capacities and is one of the greatest, truest, orange-blooded fans in the world. During his time as head coach Fulmer has won 150 games and lost 51. At 75%, only Bowden and Paterno have better win percentages for coaches who've been active in the league for more than ten years. After 17 seasons as the Vols head coach only General Neyland has more wins. He brought us our first National Championship in 47 years, two SEC Championships, and won the SEC East five times.
Fulmer begrudgingly agreed to step down citing the division amongst the Vol Nation as the reason. “Our Tennessee family is united in its goals, but divided in the right path to get there. I love Tennessee too much to let her stay divided,” Fulmer said during a nearly 7½-minute prepared statement he read before media, family, friends, donors, coaching staff and entire team crammed into Neyland Stadium’s media center.
A steady decline in wins over important rivals and recruiting, as well as the division amongst the fans and alumni are stated as the reasons for the move by the University. Many agree that this is the only course of action, but all agree that Fulmer will forever go down in Tennessee lore as one of it's greatest folk heroes. He has been offered a role at the University in an administrative or athletics capacity. Fulmer has gained immense knowledge and robust talent over the years and has been a tremdous assett at many different levels. It is greatly hoped that he will continue to contribute his immense skill set to our great institution.
The Kentucky game at Neyland Stadium has been dedicated as "Phillip Fulmer Day". See you at the Tavern then!

The Third Saturday In October
This weekend is the "Third Saturday In October", only this year the game will be held on the fourth Saturday. 2nd ranked Alabama is coming to Knoxville for the 91st meeting between these old rivalries. The first match up took place in Birmingham, AL, in 1901 and ended with two thousand fans pouring onto the field in what turned out to be one of the largest fights in collegiate history. The game ended in a frustrating 6-6 tie and continues to be one the sport's wildest, most impassioned rivalries.
What makes Saturday's game interesting is that our defensive safety Eric Berry, who is by far the biggest star on the team, may play some on offence in a package called the "Wild Berry". Berry broke a 60 year old SEC record for total yards returned (397 so far) last week against MSU, and he's only a sophomore!
Come join as at the Tavern this Saturday to cheer on the Vols!
When: Saturday, October 25th 5:45 PM MST

We are scheduled to be in our usual spot on the back patio, but if for some reason we aren't there just look around inside or in the "back room". Come early to get a better seat, tip your servers well, wear orange, and....

Tennessee vs. Mississippi State
State will certainly be on a high after defeating 13th ranked and previously undefeated Vanderbilt, but who better to let the air out of their baloon than Tennessee? Nick Stephens has a 138.8 passer rating and 3TDs in two games. With experience he'll only get better. Now if he could get pass protection all game like he had towards the end of the UGA game, we could more successfully move the ball down field. Our rushing attack has been fairly successful with our top five rushers averaging 3.9 yards per carry or better. We've surpassed our opponents in scoring in quarters 2, 3, and 4, but have been out-scored 44-14 in the first quarter so far this season. We are very, very close to being a really good team as our opponents have outscored us this season by a combined total of 5 points. Britton has already improved our kicking game, now for improving kick returns. Let's see what job-saving changes Phil has up his sleve for this weekend.
Please join the Big Orange at the Tavern this Saturday to cheer on the Vols as they take on the Bulldogs!

Tennessee Vols vs. Georgia Bulldogs!
He's back! We finally have some great news Vol fans. Britton Colquitt is back and he'll be punting for the Vols for the remainder of the season. You don't think this will make a difference? Know this, currently Tennessee is ranked 115th in the nation in net punting. This will hopefully change once Britton, a member of the famous Colquitt line of kickers for Tennessee, takes the field against GA after being suspended for the first five games. Considering that the defence is ranked 5th in the nation (total defence), things could get better with a good kicking game! The bad news is that there still doesn't seem to be any good news for the offence. Last week's game saw us starting a new QB, Nick Stephens, who has retained the starting job for this week's game, but the offence still performed below expectations. There's an old adage that says quarterbacks improve most from their first game to their second. This is usually true. On the other hand, there's a big difference between NIU and UGA, and a big difference between playing in Neyland and playing "between the hedges". We shall see.
Please join the Vols at the Tavern this Saturday to cheer on the Vols as they take on the Bulldogs in an SEC East showdown! ;-)
NOTE: The weather is supposed to be nasty this Saturday so look for us inside.

Northern Illinois @ Tennessee
It's the first ever meeting between these two football teams. There is still no decision that has been announced about the starting quarterback for this Saturday evening's game against the NIU Huskies. Will it be a less than stellar Crompton or the untested Nick Stephens? Your guess is at least as good as Phil's. No worries from the Vol defense who held Auburn to a single touchdown last week. NIU is one of the teams in the Mid-American Conference, a conference Phil faced twice as offensive coordinator with two victories by more than 12 points each. Let's root our Vols on to a continued undefeated record against the MAC!

Tennessee @ Auburn
It's another big weekend as the Vols travel to Auburn after both teams experienced bitter losses last weekend. There isn't a lot optimism amongst the Big Orange faithful at this point in the season. Everyone from the QB to the secondary, the O-line to the D-line, the punters and special teams to the coaches, everyone is taking a lot of heat. When will the Vols get angry and start kick'n somebody's butt? I know a lot of you want to stay at home and hide this Saturday. But how many times has Fulmer won the game that he had to win just so we don't fire his chubby ass? All of them. Come hang with the Denver Vols at the Tavern and bring your rosary beads or prayer books, and if those don't work, Jack Daniels will.

Vols vs. UAB
OK. Not much to say about the kicking game or quarterback? Probably you do, along with some other remarks for the coaching staff, if you can stomach talking about it. But we've been in this situation before, haven't we. The Vols play UAB in Knoxville, TN this Saturday, the 13th, vs. the Blazers of UAB. After a heartbreaking loss the Vols have had a week to get angry, make adjustments, and start the road to recovery with a win at home. At the Tavern we'll have a special guest.... Cam Ballentine, former Rocky Mountain Chapter pres., will be in town! Please come down to the Tavern and watch the Big Orange take on the Blazers of UAB with friends and family. It's an early game so come ready for brunch and Bloodies! ;-)

Tennessee Vols vs UCLA Bruins
It's finally here! The much anticipated season opener against UCLA in Pasadena, California is a prime-time event as it features two premier teams from two premier conferences battling it out on Labor Day. Though the Bruins have struggled with injuries at the quarterback position throughout the off-season, don't expect a small effort on their part as they are led by one of football's best coaches in offensive coordinator Norm Chow (USC, Tennessee Titans). The Vols are also breaking in a new offensive coordinator, Dave Clawson, and expect to have a more aggressive offense than in recent seasons. There are lot's of questions on both sides of the ball for the Volunteers, but expectations are high that Tennessee can be the dark horse of the SEC. Come join us at the Tavern Uptown for what's going to be the biggest game of the holiday weekend and the beginning of another exciting season of Vol Football!

Game Notes
- The Vols & Bruins have played 13 games prior to this weekend with UT leading the series 7-4-2.
- It was the opening game against UCLA in 1994 that starting quaterback Jerry Colquitt was taken out of the game with a serious injury and the backup, freshman Peyton Manning, played his first game for the Big Orange.
- Fulmer is 14-2 all-time in season-openers, with one of those losses coming at UCLA in 1994 (Manning's opener)
- The 2008 season-opener marks the 11th time in 12 seasons that Tennessee's first game of the season will be nationally televised. That includes six openers on ESPN, four on ESPN2 and one on ABC
- The Vols are 2-1 vs the Bruins in Pasadena
