It's brunch time (see Vols' specials below) at the Tavern this Saturday for what is most likely the red-hot Vols last major obstacle of the season. It may seem a bit early (10:00 AM MST) but you can't miss brunch with the Denver Vols!!! The Tavern normally opens at 10:00 but they've agreed to let us in early so we don't miss kickoff! Tennessee vs. Mepmhis

How awesome was last weekend??? I realize that not all of the Vol Nation was thrilled by the black jerseys, though I think most were, but no one can deny the affect it had on our performance on the field. Based on comments from AD Hamilton we may never see them again. It'll just be one of those games that go down in Vol Lore.

This weekend the Vols face Memphis, a tough C-USA team with a good passing game. We hope everyone in the Denver Vol Nation can come to the Tavern to watch!!! We're almost always on the back patio.

Tennessee Vs. South Carolina

South Carolina comes to town this weekend in yet another big SEC matchup. Steve Spurrier's Game Cocks are having one of their better seasons in recent years and, at least on paper, are good matchup for the Vols. Tennessee has made big strides this season and is improving under first year head coach Lane Kiffin while the South Carolina is also improving. We hope you can come to the Tavern this Halloween to cheer on the Vols!

The Third Saturday In October

Once again the Third Saturday in October falls on the 4th Saturday of October, but the meaning of this rivalry has not been diminished in the least. The first match between the two schools took place in Birmingham in 1901 (many years after both teams were organized) and ended with fans from both sides spilling on to the field to continue the match in the form of an old fashioned brawl. Though I doubt we'll see that again any time soon we do hope the Vols are able to hang in and fight with a much deeper Alabama squad. Join the Vols at the Tavern this Saturday for another exciting game and great rivalry tradition.

Georgia @ Tennessee

Georgia comes to Tennessee this weekend after both teams suffered a loss last Saturday. UGA is a tough match-up and a top Eastern Division rival. We hope you can make it to the Tavern this Saturday to cheer on the Vols! It's an early game so come join us for brunch.

Thanks to those who brought donations for the Food Drive last week. We don't have the totals in yet so we'll have to wait and see if we at least beat Auburn at something!

Game Notes:
Tennessee holds the all-time series lead 20-16-2 dating to 1899. The Vols also hold a slim edge in games played in Knoxville at 10-8-1. The last five games in the series are split 3-2 in UT's favor.

This is the first SEC opponent that UT has faced this season who doesn't run a spread or "gimmick" style offense.

Ohio @ Tennessee

The last time Frank Solich played the Vols he beat us pretty badly. The #3 Nebraska Cornhuskers bested the #5 Volunteers in the 2000 Fiesta Bowl. It was even worse when we played his team a couple years before that. But now he is the head coach of the visiting Ohio Bobcats, a team best known for a strong secondary that excels at shutting down the pass. Not something to overlook since Tennessee coaches seem hell-bent on improving our passing game this week. This match-up might be closer than most fans expect. Join us at the Tavern Saturday to watch the Volunteers! Kickoff @ 5:00 PM!!! It's on PPV, but the Tavern has it!

Game Notes
  • Vs. The Mac:
Tennessee holds a 2-0 all-time advantage over teams that now comprise the Mid-American Conference. The Vols defeated Northern Illinois 13-9 in 2008 and Akron 52-9 in 1989. It is the first meeting between Ohio and the Vols.
  • Vs. Ohio Teams:
Tennessee is 10-1 vs. teams from the state of Ohio, which included matchups vs. Akron, Cincinnati, Dayton and Ohio State. The Vols only loss to an Ohio team came vs. Cincinnati in 1904.

    Game Notes:
Tennessee and Florida are tied at 19-19 in the all-time series dating to 1916. The Gators own a 9-5 advantage in Gainesville and have won the last two contests there. Florida has won the last four straight overall.

From: Board of Trustees Vice Chair Jim Murphy
    Subject: Leadership Change

The news media will soon receive the press release below, publicly
announcing the resignation of Dr. John Petersen as president of the
University of Tennessee. I am sending it to you here because it is
important that employees receive this news first from the University.

Since Dr. Petersen took office on July 1, 2004, UT has experienced a
period of dynamic and positive change. Ensuring the University's
continued success has been the first priority as the Board of Trustees
have considered Dr. Petersen's resignation and arrangements for
    transitional leadership.

We are fortunate that Dr. Jan Simek has agreed to serve as acting
president. Dr. Simek most recently served as interim chancellor for the
Knoxville campus, where he has been with the University since 1984 in
    both academic and administrative roles.

Because transitions in leadership can be unsettling, I want to assure
you that the University will be in good hands with Dr. Simek in the
President's Office, the Board of Trustees is committed to ensuring the
next UT president brings the energy and caliber of leadership necessary
to sustain the momentum achieved by Dr. Petersen, and finally, that this
great University will continue to make the positive impact it does on
the lives of all Tennesseans. Thank you for your work and your
commitment to the University of Tennessee.

A Webcast of a media availability with Dr. Petersen, Dr. Simek and Mr.
Murphy will begin at 4:30 p.m. EST today and can be viewed at

    FOR IMMEDIATE USE

UT Announces Petersen Stepping Down, Simek Named Acting President

KNOXVILLE -- University of Tennessee President John Petersen and Trustee
Vice Chairman Jim Murphy jointly announced today that Petersen will
resign as president, effective June 30, 2009, and that Dr. Jan Simek,
most recently the interim chancellor for UT Knoxville, will be
recommended to the Board to fill the post for up to two years.

Petersen will be on administrative leave with pay beginning March 1
through June 30. Simek will be acting president from March 1 through
June 30 and will become interim on July 1. His appointment as interim is
    not to exceed two years.

"As I approach the end of my fifth year, I have been giving serious
thought to my future plans and had determined I wanted to leave in
June," Petersen said. "In discussions with Vice Chair Murphy and other
board members, we agree that it serves the University's interest best to
make the change now so that the person responsible for implementing cuts
in next year's budget will be the person leading the difficult budget
    decisions in the coming months."

"Jan Simek is the ideal choice for this role," Petersen said. "I was
pleased to choose him to fill the critical UT Knoxville interim position
and I know he will have full support and will do an excellent job in
    this new capacity."

Murphy said, "Dr. Petersen and his team have been diligent in carrying
out a strategic and inclusive process to address the budget issues
facing the University. They have a solid plan that is ready to be
reviewed by the board at our February meeting. John feels, and I agree,
that if he intends to leave in June, it makes sense for new leadership
to finalize the plan and take it forward."

Simek, who has been with the University since 1984 in both academic and
administrative roles, served as interim chancellor for the Knoxville
campus for a year, during the search which brought Dr. Jimmy Cheek to UT
    Knoxville Feb. 1.

Murphy said Simek's appointment will be considered by the Board at its
Feb. 25-27 meeting and will be for up to two years with no set schedule
for conducting a search for Petersen's replacement.

"Jan Simek has proven his loyalty to the University and has demonstrated
his ability to facilitate change in the academic arena," Murphy said.
"We will use this time to carefully and thoroughly study the role of the
System administration while we work through the budget issues. Our goal
will be to set our budget models, clarify governance and streamline
system administration before we pursue hiring the next president."

Petersen took office on July 1, 2004. He said that in considering the
direction and vision he brought to the University, and progress toward
goals thus far, "Now is the right time to make this change."

"When I came here five years ago, we had a clear direction and a clear
set of needs," Petersen said. "I feel we have met those needs and
redefined the University's strategic direction for the future. As a
team, we have enjoyed some extraordinary, unprecedented successes in
research and economic development, we have made phenomenal progress in a
$1 billion capital campaign, and our campuses have made great strides in
    the quality of students enrolled."

Murphy, noting achievements coinciding with Petersen serving as UT's
23rd president, said, "In slightly less than five years, Dr. Petersen
has had a transformational impact on the University of Tennessee and led
the statewide UT System in remarkable progress -- in growth in
enrollment, research and economic development, and in private giving."

"We are grateful to Dr. Petersen for his lasting and positive
contributions to this great university," Murphy said. "We will work to
ensure the continued successes enjoyed in recent years, and we will
attract excellent leadership to share our commitment to making UT one of
the top-tier universities in the country."

Petersen will receive one year of his base salary, which is $410,177,
and it will be split in two payments. The payment is in exchange for
releasing any rights that may have survived under his contract that
    expired June 30, 2008.

Simek will be paid a base salary of $400,000, and his compensation
package does not include an expense allowance, use of a state vehicle
nor University housing. Upon returning to the faculty as Distinguished
Professor of Anthropology, Simek will be paid at the rate of 75 percent
of his base salary as interim president.

All compensation arrangements will be recommended to the Board of
Trustees at their meeting Feb. 27 and are subject to their approval.

    LSU Ski Train

The LSU alumni group has put together a ski train trip for early March and has extended an invitation to all SEC clubs.

If you've never been you should definitely consider going. Posted here it the email containing the information for the trip:

    ========================

I'd like to extend an invitation to you and your groups to join us for this year's ski train event. We've got a club car reserved for Sunday, March 1st. Its a little pricey - $145 including ski pass - but its worth it as we get a continental breakfast, light dinner fare, and free non-alcoholic drinks (alcohol is available for $). If a pass is not needed for Winter Park, the train-only option is $85.

Last year we had several folks from your groups join us, and a good time was had by all. There are only 38 spots available on our club car, so if anyone would like to join us, they'll probably want to reserve a spot soon. Payment is due January 25th.

Details can be found here: http://lsudenver.com/go/index.php?itemid=17

Please forward this to your group if you see fit.

If you've got any questions or concerns, feel free to email me. I check my email quite often.

    Thanks,

    Brad
